Wings of Wisdom Program

Women in domestic violence shelters, women in homeless shelters and women coming out of incarceration - these are the women in transition that the Wings of Wisdom program of the Women of Wisdom Foundation is committed to reaching. Women whose lives do not allow for the personal freedom to attend Women of Wisdom's annual conference full of inspiring and empowering workshops by and for women. So we bring the wisdom to the women where they live.

Lizard by Sue CocciaOur intention is to show up for these women, to provide a physical presence and offer them the information they need to be re-inspired and re-empowered in their lives. We provide guest speakers with topics ranging from women's relationship to their bodies and food, to self-image and sexuality, communication, stress release and personal empowerment, including their creative selves, singing, drumming, craft making, reconnecting with and remembering what is good and true for ourselves.

Marla Swassing is our volunteer liaison at New Beginnings, a domestic violence shelter in the Seattle area. Marla has worked for the Casey Family Programs as a Senior Accountant for nine years. She has volunteered her time with a variety of different non-profit agencies in the Seattle area for the past eight years and has been working with Women of Wisdom since 2001. She feels honored to be working with the women at New Beginnings on their journey. If you are interested in helping Marla at New Beginnings, please contact her. mswassing@hotmail.com

Earlier this year, we were serving the women at Noel House, a homeless shelter in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood with a bimonthly talking circle and tea, complete with refreshments, that attracted different women, issues, and facilitators, and the same woman-to-woman exchange that we delight in here at the Women of Wisdom Foundation. Our dear friend, Edith Rohde, who initiated and facilitated this program is no longer able to participate so we are seeking a new coordinator at this time to restart this valuable program.

We have an exploration of the Expressive Arts the third Sunday of every month with the women at the YWCA's Angeline's Day Shelter for Homeless Women. Our focus at this shelter is to inspire the spirit and the body through rhythm, music and the arts! We hope to re-establish a bimonthly drum circle and the women we serve have dreams of poetry readings, talent and Karaoke shows. If you have ideas of ways to help these women express themselves, please let us know. Cynthia Lyons is now facilitating this circle.

How to Get Involved

  1. The women need your wisdom, volunteer to be a speaker! - Coaching the women to explore creative possibilities for their lives, resume writing tips, job interviewing, parenting skills, martial arts/self-defense, drug/alcohol education, setting goals, women's legal issues, education on women's resources, inexpensive wardrobe guidance, car maintenance, etc. - Facilitate a talking circle and inspire others by sharing your personal story so these know they are not alone in their struggle to show up in the world in a good way.
  2. Volunteer and be part of the Wings' team! - Support one of the women's shelters by attending the monthly gathering with Cynthia Lyons at the Ratcliffe House or Angeline's and Marla Swassing at New Beginnings. We also need people to distribute donated items to these shelters. If you have a car and some time, let us know!
  3. Volunteer to be a facility coordinator at either Pathways, a domestic violence shelter in Lynnwood, Noel House or Angeline's in Seattle.
  4. Research funding possibilities for the Wings program, which currently has no operating budget. Money is needed for craft materials, refreshments, travel and parking expenses, telephone calls and mailings. With funding we could also offer a small financial gift to the guest speakers and the potential for a "speaker series" providing more depth and familiarity with the speaker and the subject matter would benefit the women tremendously. Funding would serve to develop and administer a deeper and even more meaningful program.
